Long before Earl May there was Peter Henderson

Peter Henderson
June 9th, 1822 to January 17th, 1890

Peter Henderson was a "Scottish-American scientist, known as the "Father of American Horticulture." He learned methods of gardening in the Old World, then immigrated to the U.S. in 1843. He started market gardening in 1847 with a capital of $500.00. The publication Gardening for Profit (1868) was the first American book devoted entirely to market gardening and it encouraged many to enter the business. His seed business was started in 1865. Few men have done more to simplify the handling of plants for commercial use. His greenhouses were models for his many visitors and his methods were widely copied. He also wrote Practical Floriculture (1868) for commercial horiculture, and later, for the amateur audience, Gardening for Pleasure (1875).

- A "peculiarly Modern Preoccupation"...identity...a New Book
Martha C. Nussbaum wrote... Peter Brooks has written a splendid meditation on the search for the self: erudite, illuminating, and eloquent. He shows how this search leads to an obsessive focus on markers of identity and stories of imposture. Rousseau,...

- Analog To Digital...about Two Years
It has been about two years since the switch from analog signals to digital signals. We were promised a lot and frankly have received little. The whole process, as I have discussed before, was questionable and basically a means for the Federal Government...

- Kcmo's "science City" [old Union Station] Has New Planetarium
I seriously doubt that this will save the behemoth Union Station. Union Station is one of a few old massive train stations that has been saved. It has had nothing but problems [management and maintenance] over the years and despite a bistate tax [shared...
