The arXiv website is a renown open access repository to 500,404 e-prints in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Quantitative Biology and Statistics sponsored by Cornell University Library. It offers preprint material that is often denied to the layperson save via subscription or "fee per article". There may well be more such repositories in the future.
